The Best Bluetti Power Station For Van Life (And The Number That Fools Everyone)

Two Bluetti power stations both advertise the number 3,840. On one it's the battery. On the other it's the inverter. Get them the wrong way round and you've paid full price for a third less electricity. Here's which one you actually want.

Bluetti now sell five power stations that could all plausibly go in a van, and picking between them is a genuinely miserable afternoon. Five product pages open in five tabs. Five spec sheets that each lead with a different number, none of which line up with the number on the tab next to it. One of them says 600. One says 3,840. Another also says 3,840, and means something completely different by it.

At some point you give up comparing and just buy whichever one the algorithm has decided to show you, which is how people end up with a 39kg battery for weekend camping, or a 288Wh unit they expected to run a fridge.

So this is the whole Bluetti lineup — Elite 30, 100, 200, 400 and the Apex 300 — in the order that actually matters for van life: what it holds, what it'll run, and what it weighs when you've got to get it through a side door. Starting with the one spec that trips up more buyers than everything else combined.

The 3,840 problem

Bluetti currently sell two units that both wave the number 3,840 about in their marketing. They are not the same number.

On the Elite 400, 3,840 is watt-hours. That's the battery. That's the tank.

On the Apex 300, 3,840 is watts. That's the inverter. That's the size of the tap, not the size of the tank. The Apex 300's actual battery is 2,764.8Wh — about 28% less energy than the Elite 400, in a box that weighs virtually the same and looks broadly similar sat on the floor.

If a spec sheet gives you one number and no unit, it is not a spec sheet. It's an advert. Watts are how fast. Watt-hours are how long. Confuse them and you will be cold.

I mention this because the source video I watched for this piece — a Bluetti lineup walkthrough from The Solar Pit, which is otherwise a perfectly sensible watch — says the Elite 400 "has the same capacity as the Apex 300 at 3,840 watt hours." It doesn't. Nobody's being dishonest; it's exactly the sort of thing that happens when two products share a number and you're talking to camera with five of them on a table. But if you buy on that sentence, you're 1,075Wh short of what you thought you were getting, and 1,075Wh is a Welsh winter night's heating.

Right. With that out of the way, here's the actual lineup.

Two things jump out of that table and neither of them is capacity.

First, the Elite 400 has no more output than the Elite 200. Same 2,600W inverter. You're paying the extra purely for the battery. That's fine — that may well be exactly what you want — but don't imagine the bigger box runs bigger things. It runs the same things for longer. That's the whole difference.

Second, the two cheapest units have the best USB-C port. The Elite 30 and Elite 100 do 140W. The Elite 200 and Elite 400, which cost considerably more, do 100W. So the little one charges your laptop faster than the big one. I've read that spec sheet three times now and it still makes no sense to me, but there it is. If you're the sort of person who lives off a 16in MacBook Pro in a van, that's not a footnote, that's the actual daily experience of the thing.

Elite 30 — the "I just don't want a flat phone" one

288Wh and 600W. In real terms: a laptop, a phone, a couple of USB fans, some lights. It will not run a kettle, it will not run an induction hob, and it will look at your Nespresso machine and simply refuse.

But it weighs almost nothing, it takes 200W of solar, and it has that 140W USB-C. For a weekender, or as a second battery you throw in the passenger footwell for the drive up, it's honestly hard to fault.

Elite 100 — the sweet spot nobody talks about

1,024Wh, 1,800W, four AC sockets, and a full 1,000W of solar input — the same solar input as units four times the price. That last bit is the quiet win. If you've got roof space, this thing fills up as fast as the big ones do.

1,800W will run a small microwave, an air fryer at a push, and absolutely anything with a plug that isn't trying to heat water. For most people doing long weekends and the odd fortnight, this is the one.

Elite 200 — where it stops being portable

2,073.6Wh and 2,600W. It's a proper little powerhouse and it'll run more or less anything you'd genuinely want to run in a van.

It's also where the word "portable" starts doing some heavy lifting. You can move it. You won't enjoy moving it. Once this thing is under the bed, it is living under the bed, so measure twice and think hard about where the vents are pointing.

Elite 400 — 39kg of not-having-to-think-about-it

3,840Wh. Same 2,600W output as the 200. Around 39kg, which is roughly a Labrador you're not allowed to put down.

Bluetti have at least been honest about the weight: it's got a telescopic handle and two proper wheels, so on a hard floor it's genuinely fine to shift about. In a van, on gravel, in the dark, in the rain, it is a large heavy box and no amount of wheels changes that. This is a unit you install once and then leave alone for two years.

If your van is your home rather than your hobby, and you're sick of doing electricity arithmetic before you put the heater on, this is the answer.

Apex 300 — the flexible one, with an asterisk

Smaller battery than the Elite 400 (2,764.8Wh) but a much bigger inverter at 3,840W, and 2,400W of solar input, which is more than double the Elite series. It also takes expansion batteries — the B300K packs — and can be paired with additional inverters. None of the Elite units expand at all. What you buy is what you own, forever.

That expandability is the entire argument for the Apex 300. It's a system you can grow rather than a box you eventually outgrow and resell at a loss. If you want one unit that does van duty in summer and backs up the house in winter, this is the one.

The asterisk is the next section, and if you're reading this from a UK postcode it's the most important part of the article.

The bit the American reviews won't tell you

Nearly every glowing Apex 300 review you'll find online is American, and a good chunk of what they're excited about does not translate.

The Apex's headline party trick is simultaneous 120V/240V output with native 30A and 50A RV receptacles — you plug your motorhome's shore power lead straight into it. That's a US split-phase thing. UK vans run 230V single phase on a blue 16A commando socket. The 50A and TT-30 sockets are, for us, decorative.

Likewise "hook it to a transfer switch and back up your central loads" is a sentence written by someone with an American consumer unit and American wiring regs. Doing the equivalent here means a proper changeover switch and an electrician who signs the paperwork, not a YouTube video and an afternoon.

None of this makes the Apex 300 a bad buy in the UK. It just means roughly a third of its selling points are aimed at somebody else's driveway, and you should price it accordingly.

Before you buy any of these on an American review: check the socket, check the voltage, and check whether the clever feature they're demonstrating is even legal here.

Same goes for the prices you'll see quoted. US retail on these things maps to UK pricing about as well as US fuel prices do, which is to say not at all. Check the UK listing, not the dollar figure.

So which one do I actually buy?
