Privacy Policy
Last updated: 31 July 2026
This policy explains what information A Van Life Thing (avanlifething.com) collects about you, why, and what you can do about it.
Who runs this site
A Van Life Thing is an independent blog run by A Van Life Inc, based in Wales, United Kingdom. For anything privacy-related, contact: heck (4@) avanlifething ($.com)
For the purposes of UK GDPR, the site owner is the data controller.
What this policy covers
This policy covers avanlifething.com only. It does not cover external sites this site links to, including Amazon, YouTube, or any social media platform. Those have their own policies and you should read them if you're concerned.
What information is collected
Automatically, when you visit
Like almost every website, this site's hosting infrastructure records basic technical information when a page is served: IP address, browser type, device type, operating system, referring page, and the time of the request. This is standard server logging and is used for security and to keep the site running.
Google Analytics
This site uses Google Analytics to understand how many people visit and which posts they read. Google Analytics sets cookies and collects information including:
- Pages viewed and time spent on them
- Approximate location, derived from IP address (city or region level, not your address)
- Device and browser information
- How you arrived at the site (search, social media, direct)
This data is aggregated. It is used to work out which posts are worth writing more of. It is not used to identify individual visitors.
You can opt out of Google Analytics across all websites using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Advertising cookies
This site displays advertising served by Google AdSense.
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
Users may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. Alternatively, you can opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising by visiting aboutads.info.
Email subscription
This site runs on Ghost, which includes a subscription feature. If you enter your email address into a subscribe form, that address is stored by Ghost in order to send you new posts. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of any email, or by emailing the address above and asking to be removed.
No payment information is collected. There are no paid subscriptions on this site.
Email addresses are not sold, rented, or shared with third parties for marketing.
If you contact me
If you email me, I'll have your email address and whatever you wrote in it. I keep correspondence only as long as it's useful and don't add you to any mailing list without you asking.
Affiliate links
Some posts on this site contain affiliate links, primarily to Amazon UK as a participant in the Amazon Associates Programme. If you buy something through one of these links, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.
Clicking an affiliate link may result in that retailer setting a cookie on your device in order to attribute the sale. This is controlled by the retailer, not by this site, and is governed by their privacy policy.
Affiliate links do not influence which products get a positive review. Where I've been sent something for free or at a discount, the post says so.
Legal basis for processing
Under UK GDPR, the legal bases relied on are:
- Consent — for analytics and advertising cookies, and for email subscriptions. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legitimate interests — for basic server logs, used to keep the site secure and functioning.
Third parties that process data
- Google (Analytics, AdSense) — analytics and advertising
- Ghost — website platform and email delivery
- Amazon — affiliate link attribution, where you click an affiliate link
How long data is kept
Server logs are retained for a short period by the hosting provider. Google Analytics data is retained according to the retention period set in the Analytics account. Email subscriber records are kept until you unsubscribe or ask to be deleted.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Ask what personal data is held about you
- Ask for it to be corrected
- Ask for it to be deleted
- Object to processing, or ask for it to be restricted
- Withdraw consent for cookies or email at any time
- Complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk)
To exercise any of these, email the address at the top of this page.
Cookies
You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings. Blocking cookies won't stop you reading the site, though some things may behave oddly.
Children
This site isn't aimed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect their data.
Changes to this policy
This policy will be updated if what the site does changes. The date at the top shows the last revision.Suggested text: Our website address is: https://avanlifething.com.
