Van Build Essentials
Having the right gear for a van build makes a HUGE difference. I started out with a saw, Dewalt Drill, some bits and that was my lot. Over the years I've managed to build up my kit list to what Im showing below.
The products do link to Amazon and I get a small amount of commission (which really helps given fuel prices) but, and more importantly, the price of the item doesn't change for you.
If you're shopping at Amazon and you just click my links to purchase something there's still small amount of kickback for us.
Van Insulation
Sound deadening choice for me was Dodo Mat Dead-EZY. I tried stuff from Temu and it was more bitumen than sound proofing material. Even with the van half covered the reduction in road noise and resonance was measurable.
Dodo Mat Dead-EZY - Dont get the Temu version
I went for 10mm insulation after the smallest amount of research. 6mm seemed like it would just about do the job but the Dodo Mat Thermo Pro 10mm was worth the extra for the extra mm of insulation. I hate being cold and ill update the page in the summer to let you know if it's helped keep the van cool

Basecoat for painting Plywood
it's easy to think that when you put up plywood thats the job done but after a little investigation and watching some YouTube channels you need to prime most plywood before painting.
Why? It prevents stains after painting but more important stops the wood absorbing moisture in the air, which in turn prevents contraction and expansion along with making your top coat go a lot further
- If your plywood has knots (like structural spruce or pine ply): You absolutely must use Zinsser B.I.N. It is a shellac-based primer, meaning it smells quite strong when applying it, but it dries incredibly fast (in about 45 minutes). It is the undisputed king of stain-blocking. It will seal the wood entirely and lock those knots in so they never bleed yellow through your white topcoat.
- If your plywood is clear and knot-free (like high-grade Birch or hardwood ply): Go with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3. It is water-based, so it has very little odor and cleans up easily with water. It goes on stark white and has built-in mold resistance, which is perfect for a van
Side note: Only use methylated spirits to clean your brushes as according to
