Barmouth Central Car Park: Overnight Campervans Welcome
Barmouth’s Central Car Park welcomes motorhomes and campervans overnight on its outer wall bays, at £23 for 16 hours. Where it is, how to pay, which code to use, and the rules that catch people out.
If you’ve parked your motorhome or campervan in Barmouth before, you probably remember Alyn, the local who used to look after the Central Car Park, pull the gates shut at 6.30pm, and charge around £15 for a secure, locked overnight stop. Even if you have no idea who Alyn is, the good news is that you
Tariffs and Working Out the Costs
The updated tariff structure posted on-site breaks down across hourly and block rates:
- Up to 4 Hours: £10.00 (£2.50 per hour)
- Up to 8 Hours: £18.00 (£2.25 per hour)
- Up to 16 Hours (Overnight): £23.00 (approx. £1.44 per hour)
Note: JustPark listings show an entry price starting from £10.10, so always check the total in the app before you confirm.
The 16-Hour Overnight Limit
Keep a close eye on the duration limits. Because the maximum overnight tier is capped at 16 hours, arrival times matter. For example, if you pull in and pay at 2pm, your session expires at 6am the next morning.
What the JustPark Listing and Signs Say
To be precise about where the rules come from, the JustPark listing specifies several conditions:
- Single Entry and Exit: Each booking allows one entry and one exit, so if you drive out for chips, you’ll pay again to get back in.
- No Pre-Booking: There are no advance bookings. You pay via JustPark on arrival, so spaces can’t be guaranteed.
- Vehicle Restrictions: The location is titled Central Car Park Barmouth Motorhomes Only and is listed as high clearance.
For amenities, park4night lists public toilets nearby, but there is no water, waste disposal or electric hook-up on site.
Enforcement and Appeals
The car park is monitored 24/7 by ANPR cameras. If you overstay or break the rules, expect a Parking Charge Notice (PCN) for £100, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days, as shown on the site signage.
To appeal, go to Initial Parking first. If they reject it, take it to POPLA, the independent second-stage appeals body, since Initial Parking is a British Parking Association approved operator.
Local Warning: Past visitors have reported that Sunday markets can sometimes block vans in, so keep an eye out if you’re parked over the weekend.
The Wider Picture in Gwynedd
Gwynedd Council introduced orders preventing motorhomes from overnight parking in designated bays along the A496 approach into Barmouth, following instances of irresponsible parking and camping. To accommodate touring vehicles, the council has also set up its own network of Arosfan overnight aires, which allow stays of up to 48 hours.
Not everyone locally is keen. A letter to the Cambrian News objecting to proposed council campervan parking on the seafront came from a resident who lived opposite the site and openly admitted he loathed campervans, so was biased.
For visitors, Barmouth’s Central Car Park is a legal, automated parking option right by the station. Just remember it’s a place to sleep for the night, not a fully serviced campsite.
