- Description: Gated, CCTV-watched, a few minutes from the beach and £30 to £35 a night. Here's what Swansea Marina Tourer Park costs, how the phone-only booking actually works, what the T&Cs say, and whether it earns a place on a van life route.
- Author: The Van Man

Swansea Council will charge you £30 a night to park a van on tarmac, in a corner of the marina that doubles as boat storage. Put like that, it sounds like the opening line of a complaint letter.

Put another way, £30 gets you a locked gate, CCTV, hot showers, Wi-Fi, a chemical toilet point, fresh water and a beach a few minutes' walk away, in a city where every other council car park will happily let you park but not sleep.

Both descriptions are accurate. Which one wins depends on what else the same money buys, so I checked.

I'm based in Pembrokeshire, and heading east, Swansea is the first proper city you reach. Every so often a van needs a city: a laundrette, a decent shop, somewhere to empty everything and fill everything. I'm also tight. I don't mind paying for something. I mind paying campsite money for a car park.

## How many spaces are there?

Not many. The marina's own pages don't give a number, but the council said five dedicated bays when asked in 2023, and the Search for Sites listing says the same.

All bays are open from May to September. Outside those months there are fewer, and because boat owners come first, the marina will shrink or close the Tourer Park when it needs the space for boat storage. It's October now, so we're in the reduced season.

Each bay is a maximum of **8 metres long by 2.75 metres wide**, and the site takes motorhomes and campervans. Anything from a small campervan to a long-wheelbase panel van should fit. Big coachbuilts over 8 metres won't.

## Where it is and how far from the M4

The Tourer Park sits inside Swansea Marina in the Maritime Quarter, just south of the city centre, with Swansea beach a few minutes' walk away. The marina office is at Lockside, Maritime Quarter, SA1 1WG. App listings use different postcodes, so follow the directions on your booking confirmation.

From the east, leave the M4 at **junction 42** and follow the A483 westbound. From the west, leave at **junction 47** and follow the A483 south. The official tourism listing puts the marina about **10 minutes' drive from junction 42**.

Nobody publishes a mileage, so here's my estimate from the council's own figures:

| **Leg** | **Distance** |
| ------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| Junction 42 to Fabian Way Park and Ride | About 4 miles |
| Fabian Way Park and Ride to the city centre | About 1.5 miles |
| **Total** | **4 + 1.5 = about 5.5 miles** |

The marina is immediately south of the centre, so call it 5.5 to 6 miles, mostly dual carriageway. Ten minutes off-peak, longer at rush hour.

## What it costs

| **Stay** | **Working** | **Total** |
| --------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------- | --------- |
| One night, Sunday to Thursday | 1 × £30 | £30 |
| One night, Friday, Saturday or bank holiday weekend | 1 × £35 | £35 |
| Friday and Saturday nights | 2 × £35 | £70 |
| A full week | (5 × £30) + (2 × £35) = £150 + £70 | £220 |
| Late departure until 2pm, if available | \+ £10 | £10 |
| Laundry | £3 per wash, £3 per dry | – |

Electricity is **metered and charged on top**, and the rate isn't published. One recent Park4night reviewer reported paying an extra £5 for hook-up. That's one person's account, not an official figure, so ask when you book.

In 2023 the council quoted £25 to £30 a night. Now it's £30 to £35:

| **Rate** | **2023** | **2026** | **Comparison** |
| -------------- | -------- | -------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Cheapest night | £25 | £30 | 30 > 25, so **£5 more expensive**, a 20% rise (5 ÷ 25 = 0.20) |
| Dearest night | £30 | £35 | 35 > 30, so **£5 more expensive**, a 16.7% rise (5 ÷ 30 = 0.167) |

## What's on site

| **Facility** | **Included?** |
| -------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Electric hook-up | Metered, extra cost |
| Drinking water | Yes |
| Showers | Yes |
| Wi-Fi | Yes |
| Elsan (chemical toilet) disposal | Yes |
| Recycling | Yes |
| Laundry | Yes, paid |
| Security | PIN-coded automatic gates, CCTV at the entrance, overnight mobile patrols |

Grey water disposal isn't listed, so ask if you need it. The marina is honest that it can't guarantee security, and the council accepts no liability for loss, damage or theft.

## The rules that affect what you're paying for

Booking is **by phone only**, on 01792 470310, from 7am. The diary opens on the 1st of each month for the whole of the following month, and summer weekends go quickly.

You can arrive from 1pm and must leave by noon. **No arrivals after 9pm**, which matters if you're driving in after work.

The refund policy is tougher in practice than it looks. A full refund needs 60 or more days' notice, but because you can only book a month ahead, the longest possible lead time is 58 to 61 days, depending on the month. For most bookings, the best you'll get from day one is 50% back or a new date within six months. Inside 8 to 29 days it's a new date only, and inside a week you get nothing.

The other conditions worth knowing: your vehicle must be fully insured and carry a fire extinguisher, noise must be kept down after 10pm, dogs must be on a lead (Dangerous Dogs Act breeds aren't accepted), and any second vehicle parks outside the gate.

## How it compares with a campsite

To compare like with like, here's one night for two adults in a campervan or motorhome, with electric, at three campsites around Swansea. Prices are from each site's own published price list.

| **Site** | **Where** | **Pitch, 2 adults** | **Electric** | **Total with electric** |
| ------------------------------------- | ----------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| Swansea Marina Tourer Park | City centre, Maritime Quarter | £30 (Sun to Thu) or £35 (Fri, Sat, bank holidays) | Metered, rate unpublished | £30 to £35 plus electric |
| Riverside Caravan Park | Morriston, north Swansea | £29.50 to £31.50, by season | £3 | £29.50 + £3 = £32.50, up to £31.50 + £3 = £34.50 |
| Kennexstone Camping and Touring Park | Gower | Standard grass electric pitch, £35 off-peak or £38 peak | Included | £35 to £38 |
| Pitton Cross Caravan and Camping Park | Rhossili, Gower | £35 (spring, autumn, winter) or £39 (summer) | £7 | £35 + £7 = £42, up to £39 + £7 = £46 |

And the comparisons, with both numbers stated:

- **Marina vs Riverside, cheapest nights:** £30 vs £29.50\. 30 > 29.50, so the Marina is **50p more expensive** before you've paid for its electric.
- **Marina vs Riverside, dearest nights:** £35 vs £34.50 (Riverside's high-season pitch with electric). 35 > 34.50, so the Marina is **50p more expensive**, again before its electric.
- **Marina vs Kennexstone:** £30 vs £35\. 35 > 30, so Kennexstone is **£5 more expensive**, but its price includes electric and up to four people.
- **Marina vs Pitton Cross:** £35 vs £42\. 42 > 35, so Pitton Cross is **at least £7 more expensive**.

If that reviewer's £5 for hook-up is right, the Marina becomes £35 to £40 with electric. That's 50p to £7.50 more than Riverside, roughly level with Kennexstone, and still cheaper than Pitton Cross (£42 vs £40, 42 > 40, so Pitton Cross is £2 more).

Now the bit that stings: what you get for the money in terms of space.

| **Pitch** | **Size** | **Area** | **Price** | **Cost per m²** |
| ----------------------------------- | ---------- | -------- | --------- | --------------- |
| Marina Tourer Park bay | 8m × 2.75m | 22m² | £30 / £35 | £1.36 / £1.59 |
| Kennexstone standard electric pitch | 6m × 5.5m | 33m² | £35 / £38 | £1.06 / £1.15 |
| Kennexstone large electric pitch | 8m × 6m | 48m² | £38 / £41 | £0.79 / £0.85 |

A Kennexstone standard pitch is 33m² vs the Marina's 22m². 33 > 22, so it's **11m² bigger**, which is 50% more space (11 ÷ 22 = 0.5), and it includes electric. By the square metre, the Marina is the most expensive pitch here by some distance. You're not paying for room. You're paying for the postcode and the padlock.

The campsites have their own catches, to be fair. Riverside requires family bookings and over-21s, has a two-night minimum at weekends from May and three nights on bank holidays, and deposits are non-refundable. Pitton Cross and Kennexstone are out on Gower, which is lovely but nowhere near the city's shops and laundrettes. The Marina will take a single Saturday night.

## So, affordable alternative or council cash grab?

A cash grab would be a price well above what nearby sites charge for the same thing, with little to show for it. On the published figures, that isn't what's happening here.

The case for the prosecution:

- £30 to £35 is campsite money for a narrow tarmac bay in a boat storage area.
- Electricity is extra, at a rate nobody publishes.
- Prices are up £5 a night since 2023.
- Per square metre, it's the dearest pitch in this comparison.
- The refund rules mean most bookings are only partly refundable from the moment you make them.

The case for the defence:

- The price sits inside the local campsite range: within a few pounds of Riverside and Kennexstone, and cheaper than Pitton Cross.
- The facilities are real. Showers, water, Elsan, Wi-Fi, recycling and laundry aren't decoration.
- It's gated, coded and patrolled, a few minutes from a beach and walking distance from the city centre. No campsite in this comparison offers that location.
- It takes single weekend nights, which Riverside doesn't from May.

The council doesn't publish what the Tourer Park costs to run, so I can't tell you whether £30 is profit or break-even, and I'm not going to guess. What the numbers do show is a price set at campsite level, not a premium on top of it.

So why does it feel like a cash grab? Because it's priced like a campsite while looking like a car park. And because, for now, there's no cheaper council option sitting underneath it. Ordinary council car parks don't allow sleeping, and the new [Fabian Way](https://avanlifething.com/swansea-fabian-way-motorhome-stopover-approved/) stopover has been approved but has no published price. If that comes in well below £30, the Marina stops being the only choice and starts being the premium one, which is probably what it should be.

## The verdict

Swansea Marina Tourer Park isn't a bargain and it isn't a rip-off. It's a fair price for a small, secure, central stop with proper facilities, and a poor price for space.

If you want room to spread out, a campsite gives you more for the same money. If you want a shower, a laundrette, an Elsan and a locked gate within walking distance of the city and the beach, nothing else in Swansea currently offers that.

Book it for the location. Don't book it on a maybe. And until somebody publishes the electric rate, budget a few quid on top.

Prices and rules change, so check with the marina on 01792 470310 before you travel, and keep an eye on your parking apps for news of the Fabian Way opening.

\### How many bays does Swansea Marina Tourer Park have?
Five, according to the council in 2023 and the Search for Sites listing. The marina's own pages don't give a number. All bays are open from May to September, with fewer available the rest of the year, and the site can be reduced or closed when the marina needs the space for boat storage.

### How much does Swansea Marina Tourer Park cost?

£30 a night Sunday to Thursday and £35 on Friday, Saturday and bank holiday weekends. Electricity is metered and charged on top, at a rate that isn't published. A late departure until 2pm costs £10 if available, and laundry is £3 per wash and £3 per dry.

### Is Swansea Marina Tourer Park cheaper than a campsite?

Not really. At £30 to £35 plus metered electric, it's within a few pounds of Riverside Caravan Park in Morriston (£32.50 to £34.50 with electric) and Kennexstone on Gower (£35 to £38 including electric), and cheaper than Pitton Cross at Rhossili (£42 to £46 with electric). Per square metre of pitch, though, it's the most expensive of the four.

### What facilities does Swansea Marina Tourer Park have?

Metered electric hook-up, drinking water, showers, Wi-Fi, Elsan disposal, recycling and paid laundry. Access is through PIN-coded gates, with CCTV at the entrance and overnight mobile patrols.

### How far is Swansea Marina Tourer Park from the M4?

About 10 minutes' drive from junction 42, according to the official tourism listing. Using the council's own distances, that's roughly 5.5 to 6 miles. From the west, leave at junction 47 and follow the A483 south.
