# Sprinter Build Ep3  - The Good The Van And the Ugly

I undid the last of the four screws on the top of the laptop rack and it went straight to the floor.

Not dramatically. Not in slow motion. Just a solid, unappealable descent, followed by a noise the neighbours definitely heard, and about half a second of me realising something I should have worked out before I picked up the screwdriver: the four screws weren't the only thing holding it up. Gravity was doing the rest, and gravity had been quietly on my side the entire time until I sacked it.

Welcome to stripping out an ex-utility van.

## What I'm actually working with

Ex-Cadent, previously British Gas, Mercedes Sprinter 313\. The back is full of the kind of racking that a fleet fitter installed properly, with a budget, using tools I don't own, and with no expectation that some bloke on YouTube would later try to remove it single-handed on a driveway.

The plan for the day: get the back nice and naked. Racking out, laptop rack out, shelving out, floor visible.

That was the plan.

## The order matters more than the effort

The single biggest time sink wasn't strength. It was working out **which thing came off first**, because the fitters built it in an order and you have to reverse that order exactly.

I spent a genuinely stupid amount of time staring at a bracket going: did they screw that in first and then attach the electrics to it, or did all this go on last? There's no manual. There's no diagram. There's just you, on your knees, in eighteen months of accumulated utility-van filth, trying to reason backwards from a design decision somebody made in a factory.

> Work outwards from the fixings you can actually see and reach. If a section won't move, stop pulling — something behind it is still attached. Every single time I forced something, the thing I broke was mine, not theirs.

The one that got me: a bar running along the top that I ignored for ages because it looked structural and unimportant. Take that strip out, and an entire section of racking that had been welded-solid immovable simply lifted away.

Obvious in hindsight. Everything is.

## Separate it, don't wrestle it

Last time I did this I tried to take a whole racking unit out as one piece. It did not go well.

This time I separated it into sections in the van and carried them out individually. Slower on paper, much faster in practice, and considerably less likely to end with a shelving unit lying on top of you.

The wiring is the trap here. Twice I got a section free, went to swing it out, and discovered it was still tethered by cable I'd forgotten about. Once you've got that momentum going with something heavy, the cable is not going to be the thing that gives.

**Unplug and unclip before you lift. Not while you're lifting.**

## The health and safety bit, which I got wrong

Comments on the last video told me to sort out my PPE. They were right, and I want that on record, because I only half-listened.

The safety glasses I did have made me weirdly disoriented every time I took them off, which is a small thing nobody mentions.

The ear defenders I didn't have. Take that as the recommendation.

## When a bolt spins forever: nyloc nuts and the drill

Some bolts simply would not come undone. Turning, turning, turning, and going nowhere — because there's a **nyloc nut** on the back of it, sitting somewhere you cannot get a spanner to, spinning happily with the bolt.

Something else I learned from the comments, incidentally. This channel is essentially crowd-sourced competence at this point.

The answer, once you've exhausted patience: drill the head off. Not elegant, not something to be proud of, but you're scrapping the racking anyway and the bolt owes you nothing. A decent cordless drill and a metal bit will chew through it in less time than you'll spend swearing at it.

Same goes for the rivnuts in the van body — those are staying, so treat those with more care than the bolts going in the skip.

**One warning while drilling overhead:** whatever you're removing is going to drop the moment it lets go, and if you're underneath it, it's going to drop onto your head. Ask me how I worked that out.

## Cutting, and the mains problem on a driveway

At one point I needed to cut through a section to get it out past the battery guard — there was simply no way to thread it through intact.

No mains on the drive. So the jigsaw ran off the **EcoFlow** power station, which is one of those uses that doesn't appear in the marketing but is quietly one of the best arguments for owning one. A power tool, on a driveway, with no extension lead trailing out of a window.

Two things worth saying plainly. First: cut away from yourself, always, and don't copy anything you see me do on video without thinking about it first. Second: the neighbours. Jigsaws and hammers on a residential street have a social cost. Do the noisy bits in the middle of the day, not first thing on a Sunday.

## Keep more than you think you'll want

Not everything in an ex-utility van deserves the scrap heap.

The **USB sockets** were the obvious keeper — already wired, already panel-mounted, and genuinely useful once the van's a camper. They're held in with their own retaining bracket specifically so they can't work loose, which means an extra step to get them out, which is precisely why they're worth having.

I also kept a panel purely to use as a **template**. Once you've cut a hole in metal that fits something, the offcut is a free pattern for the next one.

And the racking itself is properly good steel. It's going to the scrapyard because I don't have the space, but if you've got a garage or a shed that needs shelving, don't weigh in something that would cost you three figures new.

## So what's under there?

This is the bit I was nervous about, because it's the bit that decides whether the whole project is viable.

**Barely any rust.** The floor under the racking is close to new — protected for its entire working life by the shelving bolted on top of it. There's factory seam sealer everywhere, presumably as much for vibration as for water.

The only concern is down at the bottom edge, at the side panel mounting points, where there's a bit of water coming through. Not a pile of rust. Not flaking metal. Just evidence of a path that water has found, which needs sorting before anything goes back in.

Even the wheel arch — traditionally where hope goes to die on a used van — looked fine.

That could all change when the floor comes up. Vans lie. But at this stage I'm cautiously optimistic that I haven't bought a rust bucket.

## What I'd tell someone starting tomorrow

Budget double the time. This took vastly longer than I expected, and I'd done a version of it before.

Photograph everything before it moves. Work out the removal order before you apply force. Separate large units in situ. Buy ear defenders. Keep the sockets, keep a template, and don't weigh in good steel out of impatience.

And have a cup of tea before you start. I went two hours without one and made noticeably worse decisions in the second hour.

### How do you remove racking from an ex-utility van? 

Work out the fitters' installation order and reverse it, rather than attacking the most obvious bolts first. Separate large units into sections inside the van instead of trying to manoeuvre them out whole, disconnect any wiring before you lift, and drill out any bolt that spins against a nyloc nut you can't reach. Expect it to take at least twice as long as it looks.

### Is there rust under van racking?

Usually less than you'd fear. Racking bolted flat against the floor shields it for the vehicle's entire working life, so the metal underneath is often close to factory condition. The places to actually inspect are the bolt penetrations themselves, the side panel mounting points and the wheel arches — anywhere water has had a route in.

### Can I touch a grounding wire safely?

An earth or grounding wire is not carrying current under normal conditions, but "normal conditions" is doing a lot of work in that sentence — a fault elsewhere in the circuit can make it live. The correct answer is to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery before touching any of it, rather than deciding case by case with your fingers. I hedged and played it safe on camera; disconnecting first would have been better.

### What tools do you need to strip out a van?

A decent cordless drill/driver with a full socket and bit set, a breaker bar for seized bolts, metal drill bits for spinning nylocs, a hammer, a jigsaw or reciprocating saw with metal blades, and a sweeping brush. On PPE: safety glasses, gloves and ear defenders. Hammering inside a steel box is far louder than you expect.

### Is ex-utility van racking worth keeping?

The steel is generally good quality and would cost real money new, so it's worth repurposing as garage or shed shelving if you have the space. If you don't, it goes to the scrapyard by weight. Separately, keep any USB sockets, work lights and LED units — they're already wired and panel-mounted, and buying equivalents isn't cheap.
